Choosing a 1132 kVA Diesel Generator for Heavy-Duty Backup

Choosing a 1132 kVA Diesel Generator for Heavy-Duty Backup

A practical guide to sizing, enclosure, control and fuel considerations for a 1132 kVA standby generator set in industrial, rental and data centre projects.

When a project calls for roughly one megawatt of standby power, the specification sheet quickly becomes the most important document in the process. This Cummins KTA38-G14 set, rated at 1132 kVA (906 kW) standby and 1029 kVA prime, sits firmly in that class of heavy-duty machinery, and it is worth walking through what actually matters when you evaluate a unit of this size.

Understanding the ratings

Standby power is the headline figure: 1132 kVA, or 906 kW in electrical terms. This is the output the set is designed to carry for emergency and standby duty, typically for a limited number of hours per year while the primary supply is unavailable. Prime power, listed here as 1029 kVA, is the continuous rating for extended running at variable load. Rental companies and site planners often work with the prime figure because it reflects real daily utilisation rather than the theoretical worst case.

Understanding the gap between the two ratings is essential. If your load profile is steady and long-running — for example a large industrial process or an extended construction project — the prime rating is the more honest number to plan against.

Engine and alternator configuration

The Cummins KTA38-G14 V12 turbocharged diesel engine is paired with a Stamford alternator, offered in the S6E 400-416 V Wye configuration (125 P) and the S6F 220-440 V Wye version (150/125 S/P). Output is 400 V, 50 Hz, three-phase, which is the standard arrangement for most European and Middle Eastern industrial sites.

Fuel consumption is given as 169 L/h at 75% of standby load. On a set this size, that figure translates into a substantial fuel logistics requirement, and planners should size their day tanks and on-site storage around it rather than treating fuel as an afterthought.

Enclosure and installation considerations

This machine is supplied as a silent generator set with an enclosed canopy and a set-mounted radiator, which means it can be positioned closer to the building or to the load without the acoustic footprint of an open skid. At 7137 mm long, 2175 mm wide and 2447 mm high, and weighing 12,267 kg, it requires a properly engineered base — a reinforced concrete plinth with adequate load capacity and correctly sized fuel and cable connections.

The enclosed canopy protects the equipment from weather and dust, which matters for sites where the set runs for extended periods without close supervision.

Control and starting equipment

PowerCommand control provides the operator with a single interface for monitoring and managing the set. The 24 V DC starting system, electronic governor, oil heater and battery charger are all included, giving reliable cold starting behaviour and stable voltage and frequency regulation under varying load.

Typical applications

A generator set in this power range is commonly deployed in:

  • Industrial production lines and manufacturing plants requiring full standby coverage
  • Data centre and telecommunications backup power
  • Construction sites and infrastructure projects
  • Hospitals, hotels and commercial complexes
  • Temporary power for events and large outdoor installations

Working with a supplier

Every machine that leaves an export workshop should be tested before it is loaded onto a truck. Working with a supplier that handles workshop testing, loading, worldwide shipping by road, sea or air, and full export documentation simplifies the process considerably. Having a named technical advisor assigned to the order also means questions about load lists, options and compliance can be answered directly rather than through a chain of departments.

If you have a specific load profile and site conditions, send them over — a proper sizing discussion is far more valuable than a headline number.
