Choosing a 910 kVA Diesel Generator for High-Duty Backup Power

Choosing a 910 kVA Diesel Generator for High-Duty Backup Power

A practical look at standby versus prime ratings, fuel planning and control options for the Baudouin 8M33G900/5 910 kVA generator set.

When a project needs around 900 kVA of standby capability, the difference between standby and prime ratings matters more than most buyers expect. The Baudouin 8M33G900/5, built in 2024, is rated at 910 kVA / 728 kW standby with 825 kVA prime output — a 1.8 kVA margin at the top end, which is exactly the headroom needed for load steps on start-up.

Standby versus prime: what the numbers mean

Standby (ESP) rating covers emergency operation during a utility failure — typically a limited number of hours per year. Prime (PRP) rating covers continuous operation at a given load for extended periods. A rental company running a set on a long project should plan around the prime figure, while a data centre covering an outage works from the standby figure.

The gap between 910 kVA and 825 kVA is small, and that tells you something useful: this machine holds its voltage and frequency well as load rises. For installations with motors, compressors or pumps, that transient behaviour is often more valuable than the last few kVA.

Fuel planning at real load points

Published consumption figures are the best starting point for budgeting:

  • 129.7 L/h at 75% load
  • 174.2 L/h at 100% prime
  • 193.4 L/h at 110% ESP
  • 89.6 L/h at 50% prime

The 1500 L on-board tank is generous for this power class. Running at 75% load, the set covers a long window before refuelling is needed — a meaningful advantage on sites where fuel delivery is scheduled weekly rather than daily, such as remote construction, mining or agricultural operations.

Control and monitoring

The standard control panel is a Trans-AMF IP65 front panel, with an optional DSE controller over CanBus J1939 for users who need deeper integration into building or fleet management systems. Protection and automation features included as standard:

  • Battery charger and engine coolant heater
  • Remote start / auto mode and emergency stop
  • Event logger, RS-485 communications and GPRS
  • Thermographic protection

GPRS reporting is worth noting for rental fleets and multi-site operators, since operating data can be tracked remotely without a site visit.

Acoustic considerations and installation

At 88 dB(A) measured at 7 metres, the silent enclosure keeps the set workable for urban and semi-urban installations. Confirm the 4316 × 1979 × 2346 mm footprint and the 6587 kg weight against your access route and lifting plan — a 6.5 tonne machine needs a prepared base and correct handling equipment.

Where this power band is typically used

Generators in the 900 kVA class are common across construction site power, hospital and institutional backup, data centre auxiliary loads, telecom infrastructure, industrial standby panels, and event power for medium-sized venues. Each of these has a different duty profile, so the standby/prime distinction should drive the sizing decision.

Pre-delivery testing

Every machine is run and checked in the GEC workshop in Istanbul before it ships, together with full export documentation, loading and international freight by road, sea or air. Each customer is supported by a dedicated advisor from quotation through delivery.
